Comments

Waireka Cheviot Stud was established in 1946 to initiate a cross-breeding programme for a steep hill-country farm in a high rainfall area. The breeding objectives of the stud have remained the same, ie. hardy, easy-care ewes with no assistance given at lambing.

Cheviots are becoming increasingly popular as hogget sires. The lambs are born small, vigorous and fast-growing. Waireka Cheviots have been scanned for fat sover. These results are available on application.

Having leased out 200ha the Cheviots were retained as the flock proved to be superior to other breeds for minimal management, maintenance and its higher resistance to facial eczema. Emphasis is placed on maintaining a flock possessing traditional Cheviot qualities with high fertility. Ewes are consistent prizewinners at A&P Shows.
